RE: EMR Action
Project – Planting at Bothamley Park.
Dear Parents and
Caregivers,
As part of our
Experiencing Marine Reserves Action Project, the Year 5&6 students have
identified that planting trees in the Porirua catchment area will be of benefit
to Porirua Harbour.
As a result of
letters from the students to the Mayor of Porirua, we have been communicating with
the Porirua City Council to see what projects have been planned that we could
help with. They have just finished clearing the ‘island’ in Bothamley Park of
problem plants and it is ready to be cleared of rubbish and replanted with
natives. The council are going to provide the plants and equipment for this
planting session and we are going to provide the people power – 85 enthusiastic
and environmentally aware Year 5&6 students, their teachers and YOU!
We are really
excited that we are able to make a positive impact to our local environment. We
know we need to clean up our backyard before we can save the world!
Unfortunately this
planting won’t happen if we don’t have enough adult support. Therefore the Year
5&6 Team would like to invite as many parents, grandparents, aunties and
uncles as possible to come and help with the planting of these natives on
Wednesday the 11th June from 9:00am -12:30pm.
We will also need your
permission for your child to take part in this action project.
As this is a
Paremata School activity, all normal school rules and expectations apply.
Date: Wednesday
11th June (postponement date Thursday 12th June and Thursday
19th June).
Transport: Bus.
Time: The
bus will leave Paremata School at 9.00am, returning to school at 12.30pm
(approx). Students and helpers will need to be at school by 8:45am.
Equipment: Students
should bring appropriate warm clothes for planting in. Gumboots are essential
as there will be ankle-deep water to walk through. A warm change of clothes is
recommended as children may get wet and/or dirty.
A spare pair of shoes and socks will
be important for when we return to school.
Personal medication (e.g. asthma
inhalers).
Food and Drink: As
always, we suggest students bring healthy food and water bottles to school. A
snack in a labelled bag for morning tea will be carried by the child to the
venue and then stored in a container whilst planting takes place. We will be
back at school for lunch.
Please complete
the consent form below to allow your child to participate in this action
project. Please also include your name
and contact number, if you are available to help us with planting or
supervision on the day. If you would like any further information about this
event, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher at school. Please return all permission slips by
Friday 6th June (week 5).
Yours faithfully,
Rachel Hall,
Jacquie Bassett, Keirryn Hintz and Jo Milne
